How to Prevent Ingrown Hairs After Waxing
Ingrown hairs are the most common complaint after waxing — and almost entirely preventable with the right routine. Here's exactly what to do, from our licensed esthetician at Full Circle Beauty in Point Loma, San Diego.
Why Ingrown Hairs Happen
When hair grows back after waxing, it sometimes curls back into the skin instead of emerging straight from the follicle. Dead skin cells blocking the opening of the follicle are the most common cause. Tight clothing, friction, and dry skin all make it worse.
The Prevention Routine
Step 1 — Wait 48–72 hours after your wax before starting any exfoliation. Your skin is sensitive immediately after waxing and needs time to settle.
Step 2 — Exfoliate 2–3 times per week starting 3 days post-wax. Use a gentle physical exfoliator (a loofah or soft body scrub) or a chemical exfoliant (a body lotion with glycolic or salicylic acid). Focus on the waxed areas.
Step 3 — Moisturize daily with a fragrance-free lotion. Hydrated skin allows hair to break through the surface more easily.
Step 4 — Wear loose clothing for 24–48 hours after waxing. Tight waistbands, leggings, and underwear create friction against freshly waxed skin and contribute to ingrowns.
Products That Help
- Tend Skin or similar ingrown hair solutions (apply after 48 hours)
- Glycolic acid body lotion — exfoliates chemically without scrubbing
- Pure aloe vera gel — soothes post-wax irritation immediately after
What NOT to Do
- Don't pick at or squeeze ingrown hairs — this causes scarring and infection
- Don't shave between wax appointments — this disrupts the hair growth cycle and makes the next wax less effective
- Don't exfoliate the same day as your wax
